In Poland, tens of thousands of cats and dogs end up in shelters annually. According to reports, around 40,000 dogs and a significant number of cats were recorded in shelters in recent years, highlighting the magnitude of the issue. While adoption rates have improved, with about 65% of animals finding new homes, many shelters remain overcrowded, often exceeding their capacity by 50% or more. Limited resources and infrastructure exacerbate the problem, and while the commitment of shelter workers is evident, the overall system struggles to meet the growing demand for care  .
Through this project, I aim to document the complex reality of shelter life for cats—capturing their resilience, vulnerability, and the quiet moments of connection with caretakers. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who advocate for their well-being and a call for greater awareness and systemic change in the treatment of stray and abandoned animals. By focusing on these lives, I hope to inspire reflection on our responsibility toward all living beings and encourage more adoptions, support, and understanding of the profound bonds we share with animals.
